Lukas Kwasniok has signed on as the new head coach of "FC Köln", committing to a four-year contract that runs until June 30, 2028. The 43-year-old leaves his position at "SC Paderborn" to take on this new challenge in Cologne.
"I was thinking about taking some time for myself, but as soon as Thomas Kessler contacted me, it became clear. Köln is a special club and I couldn't say no," – Kwasniok explained about his decision to join the team.
Thomas Kessler, the sporting director at "FC Köln", didn't hide his enthusiasm about securing Kwasniok's services. He specifically highlighted the coach's track record of developing teams with a clear identity.
"In Paderborn he demonstrated a great ability to build teams with identity, betting on attractive football and giving prominence to young talents. His philosophy fits perfectly with what we want for the future of Köln," – stated Kessler.
Born in Poland, Kwasniok's journey to coaching wasn't straightforward. His playing career ended prematurely due to an injury during his formative years at Karlsruher SC, pushing him to focus on coaching instead. And you know what? That career shift has worked out pretty well for him.
His coaching resume includes stints at "FC Carl Zeiss Jena" and "1. FC Saarbrücken" – where he notably achieved promotion to the 3. Liga and reached a surprising German Cup semifinal. Since 2021, he's been at the helm of "SC Paderborn", establishing them as one of the more competitive sides in Germany's second division.
Interestingly, this appointment comes at what appears to be a critical moment for both the coach and the club. "FC Köln" clearly sees Kwasniok as a figure who can bring fresh energy and a modern vision to their project.
The fans are now waiting to see what this new chapter under Kwasniok's leadership will bring. Can he help "FC Köln" regain prominence in the Bundesliga? The coming season will tell.
