Delap has reportedly turned down Manchester United in favor of a move to "Chelsea", with his previous relationship with Blues manager Enzo Maresca playing a key role in the decision.
"In terms of numbers, he's doing fantastic," Maresca previously said about Delap. "It's not just in terms of his numbers. The way he plays and fights and is always 'there'. But he's an Ipswich player."
The Italian coach, who worked with Delap during their time at Manchester City's academy, clearly holds the player in high regard. This existing connection appears to have given "Chelsea" the edge in securing his signature.
By the way, Maresca didn't hide his admiration for Delap even when they were opponents. Before a match against "Ipswich" in April, he praised the player's fighting spirit while acknowledging they were temporary "enemies" for that fixture.
Champions League football is reportedly another crucial factor in Delap's decision. The opportunity to compete in Europe's premier club competition apparently trumped whatever "Manchester United" had to offer.
