Ben Davies might not return to "Birmingham City" next season as new "Rangers" manager Russell Martin wants to assess the defender during pre-season. The 29-year-old center-back, who played a crucial role in Birmingham's League One title-winning campaign, finds himself at a career crossroads.
"Birmingham City" had hoped to secure Davies on a permanent deal following his successful loan spell, during which he featured in 44 matches across all competitions. He formed a particularly solid partnership with Christoph Klarer in the second half of the season.
"Martin is reluctant to close the door on any player before he's had a chance to assess them in pre-season," reports suggest regarding the new Rangers boss's approach.
Despite dropping down to League One with "Birmingham City" last season, Davies brings valuable Championship experience from his time with "Preston North End" and "Sheffield United". This experience could be exactly what Martin is looking for as he aims to refresh Rangers' defensive options.
Interestingly, Davies still has one year remaining on his contract at Ibrox. Just a year ago, his future seemed to be away from the Scottish club, but the managerial change has potentially altered his trajectory.
"Birmingham City" isn't exactly short of center-backs, with Klarer, Krystian Bielik, and Phil Neumann all under contract. However, Davies' performance last season would make him a welcome addition if a deal could be struck.
The Blues will undoubtedly be keeping close tabs on Davies' situation as pre-season unfolds. Will Martin see enough to keep the defender at Ibrox, or could a return to Birmingham still be on the cards?
