Xavi Simons has reportedly decided to leave "RB Leipzig" despite recently extending his contract until 2027. The 22-year-old Dutch international feels he has reached his ceiling at the German club and is eager to secure regular Champions League football.

"I need to take the next step in my career," the former Barcelona youth player reportedly told his inner circle when discussing his future plans.

Simons, who previously played for "PSG", has attracted several suitors, with Manchester City among the clubs interested in securing his services. However, the former Barça academy product isn't actually City's primary target.

Interestingly, according to French publication L'Equipe, Pep Guardiola's side considers Simons more of a "Plan B" option. Their main focus? Rayan Cherki, the 21-year-old French talent currently at "Olympique Lyon".

Negotiations with Cherki have reportedly advanced significantly in recent hours. The parties are nearing a contractual agreement, though some details remain unresolved. "Manchester City" is expected to submit an official offer to the Ligue 1 club imminently.

Will Simons end up at the Etihad if the Cherki deal falls through? Or might another Champions League contender swoop in for the talented Dutchman? The summer transfer window is just heating up.
