Ben Davies faces uncertainty about his future as new Rangers manager Russell Martin plans to evaluate the defender during pre-season, potentially complicating Birmingham City's hopes of re-signing him permanently.
The 29-year-old center-back enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with the Blues last season, playing a crucial role in their League One title-winning campaign. Davies featured in 44 matches across all competitions and formed a solid defensive partnership with Christoph Klarer during the second half of the season.
According to reports, Martin is keen to refresh Rangers' defensive options but isn't rushing to make decisions about the current squad. The new Ibrox boss apparently wants to give Davies a fair chance to prove himself.
"Martin is reluctant to close the door on any player before he's had a chance to assess them in pre-season and Ben Davies is likely to be offered a chance to resurrect his Rangers career," a report from the Daily Mail stated.
Despite dropping down to League One with Birmingham last season, Davies brings valuable experience from his time in the Championship with both Preston North End and Sheffield United.
Interestingly, Birmingham had previously expressed interest in signing both Davies and Kieran Dowell on permanent deals from the Scottish club. The Blues might now need to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements if Davies impresses in pre-season training under Martin's watchful eye.
Birmingham isn't desperate for center-backs, mind you. They already have Klarer, Krystian Bielik, and Phil Neumann under contract. Still, Davies' experience and proven partnership with Klarer would have been valuable assets for their Championship campaign.
With just one year remaining on his Rangers contract, Davies' situation remains one to watch. Will the defender earn a second chance at Ibrox, or will Birmingham eventually get their man?
