Liam Henderson is attracting serious interest from Championship sides as his Empoli contract runs down. The 29-year-old midfielder has emerged as a target for both "Bristol City" and "Swansea City" ahead of his free agency this summer.
"The opportunity to return to British football after my Italian adventure is certainly appealing," Henderson might be thinking as clubs line up for his signature.
The Scottish midfielder has taken quite the unconventional career path. After coming through the ranks at Celtic, Henderson made the bold move to Italy in 2018, joining Bari and subsequently turning out for "Hellas Verona", "Empoli", "Lecce", and "Palermo" in a combination of permanent deals and loan spells.
His Italian adventure has been rather productive, too. Henderson has racked up an impressive 104 Serie A appearances, while also gaining valuable experience in Italy's second tier. Not bad for a player who took the road less traveled!
Interestingly, the timing couldn't be more different for the two Championship suitors. "Bristol City" find themselves in a state of flux after losing manager Liam Manning to Norwich earlier this month. Landing a player of Henderson's caliber could be just what they need to inject some positivity back into Ashton Gate.
Meanwhile, "Swansea" have already hit the ground running this transfer window. They've secured Ricardo Santos on a free from Bolton, added young striker Bobby Wales from Kilmarnock, and splashed significant cash on winger Zeidane Inoussa.
But here's where it gets fascinating – the Welsh club has a rather unique selling point. Football legend Luka Modrić recently became a co-owner at Swansea and has already been involved in transfer negotiations, reportedly calling Inoussa personally to convince him to join the project.
Could the Croatian maestro's influence swing Henderson's decision? As a fellow midfielder, the chance to work with one of the game's greats, even in an ownership capacity, might prove too tempting to resist.
