Delap has opted to join Chelsea rather than Manchester United, with his previous connection to Blues manager Enzo Maresca playing a crucial role in the decision.
The player, who previously worked with Maresca at Manchester City's academy, seems to have been swayed by their existing relationship. This past connection has proven more attractive than the alternative offer from "United".
"In terms of numbers, he's doing fantastic," Maresca said about Delap before their meeting in April. "It's not just in terms of his numbers. The way he plays and fights and is always 'there'. But he's an Ipswich player."
Maresca didn't hide his admiration for the forward, though he maintained professional boundaries at the time, adding: > "He's an enemy on Sunday because we need to beat them, and then after the game I wish him all the best for the future."
Interestingly, the third and perhaps most compelling factor in Delap's decision appears to be Champions League football - something "Chelsea" can offer that "Manchester United" currently cannot.
The Blues' return to Europe's elite competition has clearly strengthened their position in the transfer market. Can Delap make an impact at Stamford Bridge with his former mentor now in charge? The upcoming season will tell.
