Chris Bautista quickly accepted a fight against former Bellator champion Patchy Mix after his original opponent Marlon "Chito" Vera was forced to withdraw due to injury. The Arizona-based fighter didn't hesitate when presented with the short-notice replacement.
"I was happy I got the win," Bautista reflected on his previous bout that drew fan criticism. "The fans did not like it afterwards, for sure, and they were sending all their hate my way. But honestly, I just didn't let it bother me."
The UFC matchmakers wasted no time finding a replacement after Vera's withdrawal. In fact, Bautista revealed they began working on securing a new opponent the same day Vera pulled out.
Interestingly, Bautista had already spotted potential clues about his new opponent on social media. "That same day, I saw on Instagram that Patchy was released from his contract and people were putting two and two together," he explained.
Mix brings an impressive 20-1 record to his UFC debut, presenting a significant challenge for Bautista. Despite the opponent change, Bautista maintained his training regimen in the Arizona heat, both inside and outside the gym.
Bautista seems unfazed by facing a highly skilled but relatively unknown (to UFC fans) opponent. He actually welcomes the opportunity.
"I was excited that I still got a good name, a well-respected fighter, someone with a good record and it just wasn't going to be anyone outside the Top 15," Bautista stated.
The Arizona fighter appears focused on his inner circle rather than external criticism. "People can say whatever they want, but, at the end of the day, it's just about your family and all your close friends," he emphasized.
Can Bautista successfully defend his position against the incoming former Bellator champion? This matchup certainly represents a significant test for both fighters.
